Child-Friendly Wedding at Mount Pisgah Arboretum
I absolutely love children at weddings. They are the life of the party, the first on the dancefloor, and always on the move! When Emily & Jeremy told me they were inviting lots of kiddos to their big day at Mount Pisgah Arboretum in Eugene, Oregon, I was excited to plan an event that everyone would love. I was equally excited that Aaron Courter would be the photographer: he is so talented at capturing the wonder and joy of tiny people!
Most children love weddings. They can sense the excitement of the other guests, and they feel special being a part of it all. However, very young children and those with special needs may not be able to sit still or stay quiet: for example, during the ceremony or toasts. Read on for my favorite ways to build a child-friendly day that supports all your guests!
Hire Childcare Providers
For Emily & Jeremy’s wedding, we hired two of my favorite local babysitters to help us during the event. There were a large number of toddlers and infants, and the childcare providers helped to keep them calm and happy during crucial times. They took one infant for a walk in his stroller during the ceremony (babies love to be in motion!) so his mother could stay and listen to the vows. During toasts, they entertained kiddos outside so the other guests could hear the speeches indoors. It was so helpful to have some extra eyes & ears to watch over the youngest guests and ensure they were safe and happy.

Offer Fun Activities
Think beyond a simple coloring book - children are often too excited to sit still and color during your reception! Lawn games, a bubble machine, and a temporary tattoo parlor kept both adults and children entertained throughout Emily & Jeremy’s wedding day. I also recommend having a designated space where kids can be kids - no fragile decorations or fancy rental furniture. The front lawn at Mount Pisgah Arboretum was perfect for letting the little ones run around and get their wiggles out!
Be Flexible
If you have kiddos participating in your ceremony, keep in mind that it could take a bit longer and might unfold in a slightly different way than planned. For example, your flower girl or ringbearer may feel too frightened to walk down the aisle by themselves, but they are happy to be carried by a parent. I always have a backup plan for incorporating children into your ceremony, so that we can pivot smoothly on the day if needed.
Emily & Jeremy, thank you so much for choosing me as your wedding planner and coordinator. All of your guests were so delighted by the welcoming, comfortable space we created together. Congratulations, and cheers to your bright future!
